Munngano Cooperative. Taken from the current crop. This cooperative can produce delicate, sweet and highly refined coffees. We started buying from here three years ago and it has been extremely popular. The cooperative is made up of different washing stations spread over the western region of Lake kivu. We pay three premiums for the coffee, one of which is solely for quality. At the beginning of 2017 the cherry price paid to farmers was 400 Congolese Francs/Kg. The payment system currently works with framers receiving the first payment on delivery of their coffee cherries. A second payment is then decided by the cooperative board, this amount is dependent on operational costs and the export price for the green coffee. The Fairtrade premium of 20 cts/lb has previously been spent on drying tables, community projects of buying goats and investing in further processing equipment. The cooperative group currently has some 5000 registered male and female members. These beans have black cherry undertones, a silky body and stoned fruit notes. The clarity and aroma of this coffee is arguably what makes it so popular.
